What is terminum?

The agentic IDE for vibe coding, built on tmux

Your terminals and coding agents, from any browser

terminum runs Claude Code, Codex and your shells in real terminals on your Mac and your servers, and lets you pick them up from any browser: the laptop on your desk or the iPhone in your pocket. Every session lives in tmux, so nothing is lost when you close a tab, switch devices or reboot.

What you get

Real terminals, on every screen

  • A true terminal in the browser. tmux does the emulation, so vim, htop, Claude Code and Codex look exactly as in a native terminal.
  • One workspace, every device. Start on the Mac, carry on from the phone: the same sessions, live, sized to the screen you read them on.
  • Built for the phone. A touch-first layout, a hot-key row, paste and file upload.
  • Sessions that never die. They outlive the browser and the server, and come back after a reboot.

Made for coding agents

  • Claude Code and Codex hooks. Every session shows what its agent does: working, waiting for you, done, running subagents.
  • Plans, progress and notes. The agent keeps its plan, ETA and notes for you through terminum's MCP server.
  • Alerts across sessions. See at a glance which agent waits for you and which finished while you were away.
  • Quote & Ask, bookmarks, reminders. Send selected output with a question; pin a line; be reminded when the agent ends its turn.

An IDE around your terminal

  • Files beside the terminal. A tree that follows the pane's folder, a viewer and an editor, local and over ssh.
  • Rich output. Markdown, code, Mermaid diagrams and tables rendered inside the terminal output.
  • Screenshots in one paste. ⌘V an image and Claude Code receives it, even in an ssh session.
  • Many projects, one list. Sessions in colored projects, history search, 20 color schemes.

Your servers, privately

  • Remote hosts over ssh. Add a host by its ssh command; terminum keeps its tmux connected.
  • Zero setup on the server. Only tmux is needed there.
  • Private by design. Loopback only, a password for every browser, Tailscale HTTPS for other devices, signed releases.

Install

On a Mac macOS 14+

brew install tmux
curl -fsSL https://github.com/extractumio/terminum/releases/latest/download/install.sh | sh
terminum password
terminum open

Allow the folder access macOS asks for, once. terminum hooks install connects Claude Code and Codex.

On a Linux server Ubuntu, Debian

sudo apt install tmux curl openssh-client
curl -fsSL https://github.com/extractumio/terminum/releases/latest/download/install.sh | sh
terminum password

Open it through ssh -L 48080:127.0.0.1:48080 or tailscale serve. Full guide in the README.

Questions

What is terminum?

terminum is an open-source terminal workspace for coding agents such as Claude Code and Codex, and for your shells. Terminals live in a private tmux server on your Mac or Linux server, and you use them from a browser: Safari or Chrome on the Mac, or Safari on an iPhone.

Do my sessions survive closing the browser or a reboot?

Yes. Every session lives in tmux, so it outlives the browser tab and the terminum server. After a reboot, sessions come back with their windows, splits and folders, and a session's menu shows its last 300 lines from before the restart.

How does terminum work with Claude Code and Codex?

Run terminum hooks install once. Every session then shows what its agent is doing (working, waiting for your approval, done, running subagents), and terminum's MCP server lets the agent keep the session's plan, progress and notes for you.

Can I use terminum from my iPhone?

Yes. Serve terminum on your tailnet with tailscale serve and sign in from Safari on the iPhone. The phone layout is touch-first, with a hot-key row, paste and file upload.

Is terminum exposed to the internet?

No. The terminum server listens on loopback only. Other devices reach it through Tailscale's HTTPS, every browser signs in with your password, Tailscale Funnel is refused, and releases are signed.

What do I need to install terminum?

On a Mac: macOS 14 or later and tmux 3.2 or later. On an Ubuntu or Debian server: systemd, tmux 3.2 or later, curl and openssh-client. Remote hosts you open over ssh need only tmux.

Is terminum free?

Yes, for personal use and for anyone who accepts the AGPL-3.0. Companies that cannot meet the AGPL's obligations can get a commercial license.
